In his first television role, Robert De Niro plays former President George Mullen, who is called upon to head a task force after a cyberattack destroys the country's electrical supply. Despite the short duration of the blackout, it is enough to create widespread havoc, causing planes to crash and traffic signals to malfunction. There's also a dire warning that something like this might happen again. Mullen, a well-respected leader with a strong moral code, is the perfect candidate to conduct the probe, according to current President Evelyn Mitchell (Angela Bassett) and her aides, assuring the public that a power breakdown of this magnitude won't happen again.

But there's a serious problem: Mullen's sense of reality is failing, as demonstrated first by his bewilderment at the disappearance of a domestic assistant who left five years ago and then by disturbing views into his notorious notebooks, which are now rife with fragmented ideas.

The show Zero Day examines how political dynamics and cutting-edge technology interact.

According to co-creator Eric Newman, Zero Day afdah is “a story about the fallout from a devastating hack that causes a large number of fatalities and threatens to destabilize a country already in crisis." He goes on to call it a “thriller inspired by real events,” citing stories that “haunted him,” according to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and New York Times author Michael Schmidt, who wrote for the series.

The plot goes deeper, exploring "the personal toll of power on those tasked with confronting these immense challenges, as well as the implications for their families," as co-creator Noah Oppenheim highlights.
